Today is the anniversary of the birth of David Hume. Hume is the best philosopher to write in English I think, and the brightest light of the 18th century (for Europe and North America). Locke and Hobbes are competing candidates. I can't think of anyone since who is in the same league. Plenty of very good people, Smith and Mill and Russell and so on.
Symposia all over the world in honor of the 300 anniversary, except, oddly, Edinburgh and London. While his birthplace has a commemoration, there is nothing going in the great cities where he worked. A shame.
