Remember Manuel Noriega? He fell out with the US government and was deposed; a shorter, more successful invasion by Bush Senior than those set in motion by Bush Junior. The story of Noriega's involvement with US agencies is instructive, and a dismal lesson about some forms of realpolitik. But not today. After being deposed, he was removed to the United States for trial and conviction on drug trafficking charges. He is serving what amounts to a life sentence. Nevertheless, he is out of US prison at the moment, not because he has been freed or served his time. No, he is off to France for another trial. Noriega has been extradited to France for trial on money laundering charges. I believe the rule of law has high value, and criminal laws should be enforced, etc., but this seems a bit silly. Noriega is never leaving jail except for burial. What is accomplished by trying him on these charges in France? Doesn't the French government have better things to do?
