Turns out the bright boys and girls of U.S. Attorneys office and our various secret police have once again gone off track. This afternoon Brandon Mayfield was released unconditionally by the U.S District Court in Oregon. The relevant information can be found here. Sorry, all a mistake I guess. From my perspective, the problem is not that Mr. Mayfield has now been imprisoned for what turns out to be no reason, and effectively branded an enemy of his own country, it is that this is not an isolated error. The FBI et al., have an unimpressive record of attending to terror or related crimes. They have failed pretty consistently on the domestic front, and, worse, have been all too happy to bark at Mr. Ashcroft's pleasure.
The guy did not even have a valid passport. Oh wait, a finger print may have matched one on a piece of paper in Spain. It seems these louts could do with a course or two in statistics and epistemology.
On the bright side, the Court did just what it is supposed to do.
