Guns
The local news all concerns a man who went to a mall and opened fire on whoever crossed his path, killing five and wounding four others. The gunman was shot by an off-duty police officer from Ogden. Utah is a state with lenient concealed weapon permitting. (Don't even need to be a resident.) A big fight ensued when the courts refused to allow people to bring weapons into the buildings, and another when the University of Utah's policies conflicted with the original law. (After a lawsuit and some negotiations, some sort of compromise has been reached barring guns from some parts of campus. There is a pending proposal to allow teachers to carry weapons in elementary and secondary schools.) A central argument for the rather easy access to permits and guns was that the resulting armed citizenry would be safer, that the rampaging gunman would have no safe targets and would face return fire, etc. None of that happened of course. Politics of fantasy; but this is a red state.
Surely this just proves Utah should get rid of all gun permit schemes, remove all impediments to gun use and possession, so that enough citizens are packing enough heat to make the malls of Utah *truly* safe.
